Course Requirements

Overview

To become a certified Introductory Level Iyengar Yoga teacher, a student must undergo teacher training and pass an assessment. For higher levels teachers may prepare to upgrade their certificate at assessment usually with the assistance of a more senior teacher.

Teacher Trainers

Teachers who are qualified and have been endorsed by the Certification Committee and the Board may train teachers. The following is a listing of those teachers who qualify to teacher train.

Senior Teachers

Teachers of Intermediate Junior Level 3 and above ie Intermediate Senior Levels 1,2  3 and Advanced Junior who are considered senior teachers.  Senior teachers have the responsibility of training and assessing teachers and many conduct remedial/medical classes.  This information is listed in the individual teacher’s biography on the Find a Teacher page.

Teacher Training towards Assessment and Certification

Geeta Iyengar says: “Teachers should practice the asana until they are very clear and secure about their understanding and demonstration. This will allow the teacher to teach from confidence and to focus awareness on the students”.

A student wishing to train as a teacher must have been practicing Iyengar Yoga regularly for a minimum of three (3) years before undertaking training with a teacher accredited by the BKSIYAA to train teachers. Programmes with individual teacher trainers are conducted under the Association’s guidelines either as an apprenticeship or organized as a course format. The Association does not conduct teacher training courses.

Prospective teachers should negotiate directly with an accredited teacher trainer. Accredited teachers can be found by going to Find a Teacher.

Enrolment in a Teacher Training Course

Teacher trainees are required to fill in an enrolment form. These forms are also obtainable from the Teacher Trainer running the course. Once filled in, the form should be sent to the Teacher Trainee Enrolment Administrator along with the enrolment fee. Once trainees are registered with the Association, they will receive the Teacher Training and Certification Manual.

The first level of certification – Introductory Level

To be successful at assessment the teacher trainee would be expected to have a basic understanding of teaching practices and a solid foundation in their own personal practice.

The total of training hours to apply to be assessed at Introductory Level  must be at least 250 hours of teacher training and 50+ hours of assisting, adjusting and teaching students within the course. If successful a teaching certificate is awarded. A training teacher is expected to maintain a home practice with regular attendance at their teacher trainer’s classes.

Higher Levels of Certification

As teachers become more experienced, they may upgrade to higher levels and usually do so for Intermediate Junior Level 1 to 3 under the guidance of a teacher trainer. Certificates of higher levels, Intermediate Senior and above, are assessed by Guruji, BKS Iyengar and teachers can apply through the Association’s Certification Committee.

Iyengar Yoga teachers continue their education by studying with senior teachers and by attending classes at the RIMYI, Pune. This ongoing learning is part of a teacher’s commitment to the teaching of Iyengar Yoga and is necessary to renew their Certification Mark licence and maintain the currency of their certificate.
