Yoganusasanam:  December 2019 Update

The recent Yoganusasanam in Pune has been significant for the global Iyengar yoga community.  The week was filled with classes conducted mostly by Prashant, presentations from Abhijata, and group discussions about the way forward for Iyengar Yoga.

Prashant and Abhijata presented RIMYI’s draft ‘Guidelines for Assessment’ which proposes changes to the assessment system focused on:

·       creating a more friendly assessment environment;

·       establishing a flatter system of certification (it was proposed to have four levels of certification);

·       encouraging younger practitioners (a much larger level 1 syllabus was proposed) alongside acknowledgement and acceptance of the importance to practice with intelligence and appropriateness.

Abhijata intends to send us all the finalised ‘Guidelines for Assessment’ late December or early in the New Year, which we will share with you as soon as we have it.

As a community we can’t make any decisions until we have confirmation from RIMYI.

However, changes to the assessment schedule in 2020 are likely.  If you are planning on sitting assessment in 2020 please stay in contact with your teacher trainer and watch out for information from IYNZ.

What’s next:

·       We will send you an overview report of the Yoganusasanum from the NZ participants.

·       You will receive the finalised copy of RIMYI’s ‘Guidelines for Assessment’ as soon as it is available.

·       IYNZ will consult with the teacher trainers and the wider community about how the changes may be implemented in New Zealand;

·       IYNZ will confirm the 2020 assessment schedule as soon as possible;

·       21-22 March: NZ All Assessors meeting that will include discussion on how to implement the updated assessment format.

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.

Warmest
Moni, Melodie, Anne-Marie & Jo
